"Stykkisholmur: Religion in Landscape" by Yoav Caspi, ,
The Stykkishólmskirkja church is situated in Stykkisholmur, a small town in the far west of Iceland. This place of worship was built by Jon Haraldsson in 1990. It is an exemplar of white modernist-influenced Icelandic architecture and still serves the nearby town daily. Many Icelandic churches are unique in their shape and form displaying asymmetry and extended curves yet the Stykkishólmskirkja church stands out. While I was unable to experience the interior of the church, the bell tower, the curves, the light and shadow and its display on the building will forever stay in my memory. Its unique form has also shaped a particular sense of aesthetic in the nearby community. The landscape background tells the story of that community as well as Iceland displaying a place of worship in the harshest climates yet in its purest depiction.
